Summertime is upon us. For me, that means lots of things. Hot weather. Restless natives. Quick drives to Sonic for happy hour.
And book boyfriends.
I’m a constant reader. If my nose isn’t crammed into a book for at least an hour on a daily basis, I become a cranky, unpleasant individual. My need to read always grows in the summertime. I don’t know why. Maybe it stems from being a farmer’s daughter: in the summer, lots of time was spent in the cab of a grain truck, waiting and reading. Or sprawled out in the hay meadow, waiting to be picked up for the day, reading. Or, after a long hot day of work, sitting on the dock with my feet in the pond, reading.
I would devour books in the summertime. And I still do.
Do you?
If the answer is ‘YES’, then lucky for you, we’re BFF’s. If the answer is ‘NO’, then sit your @$$ down and finish this post because you ain’t going NOWHERE until I’ve converted you. (‘Yes’-ers, hang tight. I’m putting on my Pretty Proselytizing Pants. This might take a minute.)
WHY YOU SHOULD BE DEVOURING BOOKS IN THE SUMMER TIME:
(1) Books are fat-free. You can toss ’em back left and right and the only thing you’re going to gain is a whole lotta mental stimulation and relaxation from your break with reality. Your bikini bod won’t suffer a bit.
(2) Summertime TV sucks. Big Brother, anyone? *gag* Turn the boob-tube off and pick up a book. Your brain will thank you.
(3) Book boyfriends are HOT. How else could you, in one summer’s time, crush on a Boy Next Door With An Unexpected Tattoo In A Secret Place, a Secret Agent Who Writes Poetry In His Spare Time, and a Sexy Geek With The Body Of A Greek God without becoming the world’s most notorious flirt? This summer I fully intend to crush on a Gunslinger (a summertime tradition, one started in the aforementioned hay meadow), a Man-Wolf, and a Guy Who’s Name Is Actually A Number. And that’s just for starters.
And ya know what? I’m not ashamed.
(4) A total, reality-erasing getaway is just a couple pages away! We all need a vacation…and sometimes we need more vacation than our budgets can manage. Books fix that. Really, truly, they do.
I feel like I need to que some quiet music and tell everybody to bow their heads and say a Summer Book Reader Conversion Prayer, but maybe that’s taking things a bit too far…
*cricket, cricket*

Being not a huge TV watcher as it is, I can totally relate to your reasons books are awesome. And so is writing…
Oh, wait! I know you agree about that part too, Myndi.
Good stuff!
