I don’t remember what I wanted to watch on our TV after school, but I do remember – OH! do I remember – not wanting to watch reruns of Little House on the Prairie.
Looking back, it doesn’t make sense. I was a farm girl. I loved the prairie and farm life. I loved stories that featured headstrong girls (hello, Laura much?). But I hated watching LHotP.
Maybe it was because my sister loved it. She and I didn’t have the best track record for getting along back then, and it wouldn’t be unheard of for one of us to dislike a thing simply to spite the other. I certainly wasn’t above that kind of behavior.
Maybe it was because there were no magical powers. If Laura had maybe been able to summon fairies, or if Nelly perhaps harbored a secret pair of demons in those perfect ringlets, I would have been more interested.
Do you have any thoughts about Little House on the Prairie? What after-school reruns made you want to bang your head against the wall when you were a kid?
p.s. This post is a part of a series called I’M LYING TO YOU: FOUR TRUTHS AND A LIE. If you want to check out the other posts, click here, here, here, and here.
Well given that PS, I’m not exactly sure how to reply, except that you’re making me feel really old because I watched Little House on prime time and not in syndication.
While I liked the television show, I LOVED the books. Read the entire series at least 3 times growing up.

I can’t imagine you hating anything, so this post had me giggling. I’m sorry Little House annoyed you so. Did you like Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman? My mom and I watched that show religiously! I even went as Dr. Quinn for Halloween once. I don’t remember watching much Little House, but my sister did and read all the books. I was more an Anne of Green Gables girl. I do however want to read that book Confessions of a Prairie Bitch by the girl who played Nellie. I think you should add it to your Goodreads pile too! LOL
I knew we were kindred spirits, and this just proves it. I could not stand Little House on the Prairie. I refused to read the books. Even now, as a teacher, I have the full set in my classroom, and girls go all out reading them. I just don’t understand. Blech. The same goes for Dr. Quinn. Sorry Jess Witkins. I was a Star Trek kinda gal. No prairie *chips* for me.
I still love Little House on the Prairie, though the books were way better than the show because they were real. To each her own, though. I like quite an eclectic assortment of genres.
