I have a thrift store addiction. If you’ve been around my blog long, you know this already–I used to bloggy-brag about my findings all the time.
Ahem. Sorry ’bout that.
One of my thrift-store vices is books. Secondhand books in every flavor imaginable, just ripe for the picking. Seriously? A buck a book? Yes, please! Since I have a family of six that likes to eat on a regular basis I don’t exactly have a huge budget available for book buying, and this is a great way for me to read genres I wouldn’t normally be drawn to.
But then, when I’m done, I always feel a little queasy about having read a book to no benefit of the author. THAT’S WHACK, YO.
Hence, Secondhand Book Reviews. I read a secondhand book, I review it here, and I post that review on Goodreads. Conscience eased. Best part? If you’re interested in the book, comment below and I’ll send you the book in the mail…if you promise to leave a review when you’re done reading it. TODAY’S TITLE: Needles and Pearls
AUTHOR: Gil McNiel
GENRE: Quirky Romance
BASIC PLOT: Heroine (Jo) is a single parent (from some seriously screwy circumstances). She’s had one hot fling since the break (break really isn’t the right word, but anything else will SPOIL IT), and an awkward date with a cute carpenter. Things get complicated with a movie-star sort-of friend, a handful of well-meaning old ladies, and one seriously (and hilariously) bitchy carpool mom.
WHY I PICKED IT UP: The cover caught my eye. The greens and reds were pretty. The blurb on the back was okay, but it was really the cover that caught my attention.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: It’s a quirky story and I love me some quirk. It made me giggle. It made me cringe. And I really liked Jo. I feel like we could have been friends.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT IT: I wish that the relationship between her and awkward-but-cute carpenter-guy would have had a little more…oomph. Not sexy oomph, per se, but just more. I wanted to fall in love with him more than I ended up doing.
