WHY I PICKED IT UP: The cover is lovely–soft to the touch, with a crazy cool contrast of matte and metallic lettering. Also? It’s signed, which is sort-of neat. The blurb was okay (teenage girl feels invisible after recent family trauma, makes friends with a quirky and understanding girl and her family), but it was really those two things that made me grab it. (It’s pretty clear that I’m a sucker for a good cover, isn’t it?)
WHAT I ENJOYED ABOUT THE STORY: The friendships the main character–Sydney–had felt honest. Sometimes I wanted to strangle her (and them) for some of their stupider mistakes, but that’s where the truthiness of the story really showed.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT THE STORY: Sometimes the pacing felt a little off. I would put down the book and not pick it up for a few days, which isn’t like me. Normally when I read fiction I do it in a marathon. Maybe it was the pacing, maybe it was the heavier subject matter. It was a slower read. Also, while I felt for Sydney, I never got to the point where I was actually in her shoes.
OVERALL RATING (1-5 Stars): Three Stars
